The final game of this three-Test series was at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, at the time notorious for its low-paced and variable wicket. Greg Chappell won the toss and inserted the Indians, hoping to break through their strong top order, however it also consigned the Australians to batting last. Lillee and Pascoe rattled through India's batting card, taking seven wickets between them, and the tourists were struggling at 7/164. However a brave and skilful knock from vice-captain Gundappa Viswanath (114), along with useful contributions from Kirmani and Ghavri, helped India to 237, a respectable score on a difficult pitch. Australia required 143 for victory in just over a day, a seemingly small target made all the more difficult by a fired up Indian attack, the dodgy Melbourne wicket and more controversial umpiring. John Dyson fell first, adjudged caught behind off his thigh pad, a decision that must have soothed Gavaskar's foul mood. Next ball, Ghavri bowled Chappell around his legs, a critical wicket. When Kirmani pulled off a superb legside stumping to dismiss Wood, Australia was reeling at 3/18. Doshi removed Hughes then Kapil Dev stepped up to join in the wicket feast. Bowling stump to stump, Kapil made the most of the variable bounce and claimed the last five wickets of the Test. India's stunning come-from-behind victory levelled the three-Test series 1-1. Viswanath was awarded man of the match honours for his plucky first innings century. Match scorecard: www.cricinfo.com Yours in cricket, The Third Ump

India's task was to wipe off the 182-run first innings deficit and set Australia some kind of target on the rapidly deteriorating MCG surface. Their openers, Gavaskar and Chauhan, started brightly, riding their luck but also playing some terrific shots. They were 108 without loss after the third day and made their way to 165 on day four, before controversy erupted. A low 'grubber' struck Gavaskar (70) in front and he was given out LBW, despite appearing to have hit the ball. Protesting vehemently, Gavaskar trudged off and ordered fellow opener Chauhan to leave the field with him. For a time it seemed as though the Indian captain might forfeit the innings and thus the match, however cooler heads prevailed. Chauhan returned to guide India to 324, top-scoring with 85 and receiving support from Vengsarkar, Viswanath and Patil. Australia was set a fourth innings target of 143 for victory. Dennis Lillee captured his second four-wicket haul for the game, in the process passing Richie Benaud's record of 248 wickets – then the highest number of Test wickets by an Australian bowler. Australia began poorly, losing Dyson at 30 then Wood two runs later. Kim Hughes looked in punishing form before throwing his wicket away just before lunch on day two, then Greg Chappell added 108 for the fourth wicket with Allan Border. The latter brought up his century and received good support from Doug Walters (78) then Rod Marsh (45). Australia's final total was 419, a sizeable one given the conditions. Dilip Doshi bowled his left-arm spin splendidly for India, picking up three wickets. Match scorecard: www.cricinfo.com Yours in cricket, The Third Ump
