Lawmaker only attends three out of over 50 sessions01/19/2010 | 08:57 PM www.gmanews.tv Negros Occidental Rep. Julio Jules" Ledesma was only present at three out of over 50 sessions that congressmen were required to attend last year, a review of congressional records undertaken by GMA News and GMANews.TV indicated. Ledesma, husband of actress Assunta de Rossi, was also absent during President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's State of the Nation Address (SONA) last year. While he was present at her 2007 and 2008 SONAs, journal records show he appeared after the roll call, indicating that he may have arrived late, GMA News Ivan Mayrina said in a report aired over the "24 Oras" news program. The four-term lawmaker was present only thrice at all sessions last year: on April 21, when the chamber discussed House Resolution 737 which proposes amendments to the 1987 Constitution's economic provisions, once in October and another in November, a review of the House of Representatives session journals for 2009 also showed. In the meantime, Ledesma has principally authored three measures, all of them local bills, according to a Congress website search of measures he filed. He co-authored at least 20 other measures. The House of Representatives holds plenary sessions from Mondays to Wednesdays. In 2009, sessions were held from January 19 to March 6, April 13 to June 5, July 27 to October 16, November 9 to November 20, and December 1 to December 18. one nation rally leader

Thousands of activists from groups that support the Democratic Party gathered for a march and rally on the National Mall on Saturday in a bid to rejuvenate the enthusiasm of more liberal voters and stave off an expected Republican comeback in next month’s midterm elections.
A coalition of liberal activist groups flocked to the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon in an effort to rally support for Democrats one month before the midterm elections.
Liberals, like Tea Partiers, were frustrated by the economy. But they blamed different targets. The rally also underscored the differences in the Democratic coalition which included conservative church members and gay rights activists.

LGBT Center Welcomes NAACP Chief

The One Nation Working Together rally planned for Washington on October 2, with its focus on “jobs, justice, and education,” will — not surprisingly — voice traditional progressive demands like a living wage and an end to racial profiling, but the massive gathering of leading civil rights and labor organizations breaks new ground in its embrace of full equality for the LGBT community.
The emcee’s voice begins rising to a crescendo rivaling that of any Las Vegas ring announcer, a yell driving through a dense tropical rain that concisely explains what Brazil’s adored president …

Leaders from the Uniformed Firefighters Association joined by City Council Criminal Justice Committee Chair Elizabeth Crowley, Council Member Margaret Chin, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, New York City Firefighters and community activists turned out at Engine 4 at the South Street Seaport to protest budget cuts that threaten to reduce staffing levels and close firehouses. The Mayor has threatened to close at least 20 fire companies and as many as 60 fire companies on July 1, 2010, the beginning of the new fiscal year. The last five years have been the busiest in the nearly 150 year history of the FDNY, yet City Hall still wants to close firehouses. A governments number one priority is to provide for the safety and protection of its citizens, but if proposed staffing cuts and firehouse closures are enacted it will dramatically increase in the time it takes to get a fire truck or an ambulance to an emergency and as result, civilians and firefighters will die," said UFA President Steve Cassidy. Firehouses in downtown Manhattan respond to major tourist attractions, transit hubs and potential terrorist targets including Wall Street, The World Financial Center, The World Trade Center, The Federal Office Building, the State and Federal Courts, as well as Chinatown the South Street Seaport and Little Italy, just to name a few. Cassidy continued, New York City remains the number one terrorist target in our nation and closing firehouses, especially at the levels …

Mr. Hussain condemned the 86 years long prison sentence by a US court as inhuman and praised Dr Aafia as a woman of strong determination who has raised the head of every Pakistani with pride. Mr. Hussain said that such a long prison sentence was awarded without any credible proofs. He said that Dr Aafia may be weak physically but she faced the courts with courage and determination. He appealed to the champions and flag bearers of democracy and human rights to take notice of such a long sentence on mere accusations. He said that when Iraq was invaded it was said that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction that threatened the world peace. He put a question to the European nations; the United States, the United Nations, and Human Rights Organization were any weapons of mass destructions found at all in Iraq? He regretted that on the basis of mere accusations, Iraq was invaded which resulted in deaths of millions of people. Mr. Hussain asked who was to blame for such mass murder. The demonstrations were expected to pit members of the New Black Panthers and Ku Klux Klan against one another. Others, including members of the Nation of Islam and a local group, the Concerned Citizens for Racial Equality, were also expected take part. The rhetoric began well before Tuesday's rally. "Caucasians in Paris must understand that they are the reason for Paris being the center of unsavory attention," one black protest leader, Jimmy Blackwell of the Tarrant County Local Organizing Committee, wrote in an opinion piece published last week in The Paris News. "We welcome the KKK because we want the world to see how real Americans act." One rally flier said "suspected hate crime killers" were set free by "racist Texas courts." But most of Paris' 26000 residents are likely to steer clear of the courthouse steps on Tuesday, said Marva Joe, who helps chair a diversity task force set up to address racial issues in the community. "I guess I am like most people in Paris," Joe said. "The majority of people in Paris don't agree with the way they do things. Most people are not happy about the groups, about the people who are coming." Prosecutors in the McClelland case initially charged two of McClelland's friends, Shannon Finley and Charles Crostley, with murdering him by running him over in Finley's pickup. They estimated that McClelland's body was dragged more than 70 feet beneath their vehicle. But a special prosecutor dismissed the charges last month, citing a lack of …

CALL THE NAACP: 410-580-5600 ASK: When will they support Equal Civil Rights for LGBTQ people under the 1964 Civil Rights Act? How long must we wait!? To JOIN the QUEER SOS – Daily Vigil in NYC for The American Equality Bill starting Monday, 9/27 to to: www.queersos.com PRESS RELEASE ON THIS ACTION: On Sept. 22, 2010, NAACP President Ben Jealous made that group's first appearance in history at the NYC LGBT Community Center, dedicating his speech to Bayard Rustin, the gay hero of the black civil rights movement. But in 1964 when the Civil Rights Act passed, Mr. Rustin's rights were pushed aside by the NAACP and his "sexual orientation" was excluded from protections under the non-discrimination law he helped orchestrate. Forty-six years later, the NAACP is still denying that dream to the LGBTQ community. In this video, watch Mr. Jealous struggle and fail to answer one simple question: Does the NAACP support the addition of "sexual orientation and gender identity" to the 1964 Civil Rights Act? www.youtube.com Offering "crumbs to make bread," he could not escape the topic from Queer SOS! activists, Todd (Tif) Fernandez and Alan Bounville — as well as Liz Abzug, the daughter of famous Congresswoman Bella Abzug, who co-filed the first bill ever to add "sexual orientation" to the …
