Many people know that Japanese people is constantly living under the fear of big catastrophes.

The sinking of Japan has been a theme in many Japanese movies.

When we saw the behavior of Japanese people in the 11 March earthquake, we have great respect with them. We believe the country will stand and rise again after the disaster.

The sun sinks in the end of the day, but it will rise again in the morning after.

This is the sunset at Terra Nova in the evening of supermoon.

I am so tempted to convert it into B&W for my snowdrop shots at Queen Elizabeth Park. And here is it.

White also represents condolence in Chinese traditions. Prayers are still with Japan.

I hope the snowing will stop in northern Japan and rescue effort can go on smoothly.

We are all fine. I will write a full account of the day when I have the time. Right now we are all at home, safe and well but with the threat of power cuts tonight as the power may be in short supply from the shutdown of the nuclear reactors… one of which, according to a govt source, is now officially in meltdown.

Very scary day yesterday. When you go outside to get away from the flat and the seat you are sat on the park is jerking violently around… that’s scary and I have never had that experience here despite having had many quakes since we moved here.

Up north it is awful. All our family up north are safe but whole towns – many of which I have visited in the past – have been swept away. The TV makes for heartbreaking viewing. As soon as it is sensible to do so, I will be volunteering to help in the affected areas.

earthquake in california

Each time California is struck by a disastrous quake_ such as the 1989 Loma Prieta temblor and the 1994 Northridge quake_ government officials press for tougher standards and construction. There have been at least eight small earthquakes in Southern California within the past week. California is a beautiful state, but like Japan, it is prone to major earthquakes. A huge tsunami generated by a powerful earthquake in Alaska's Aleutian Islands could threaten harbors and shorelines of 100 California cities and towns and 20 counties, the state's tsunami specialist warned Monday. Said Tuesday the centers had been set up at Seattle-Tacoma Airport in Washington and Travis Air Force Base in California. If that were the case, though, the earthquake would have hit already. A text message hoax is circulating throughout Kern County, warning that a big earthquake will strike California in the next 24 hours. The devastating earthquake in Japan has served as a painful reminder of the fact that California has struggled on a number of fronts to protect residents from the next big one, namely when it comes to bolstering at-risk buildings. Your email privacy is 100% protected. Lawmakers rattled by the earthquake in Japan, are looking at whether more precautions are needed for nuclear reactors here in California. California is overdue not just for a cataclysmic earthquake but a blockbuster double feature – two of them – that could overshadow the destruction of the 1994 Northridge or 1971 Sylmar quakes, experts said Monday. The U.S. Geological Survey says a small earthquake was recorded in California’s Santa Clara County. California legislators at the state and federal levels are pointing out that Japan’s earthquake was many times worse than Fukushima’s safety measures had been designed to withstand. An unfounded scientific assertion by a nonscientist has swept across the Web like a tsunami over the past few days. California is a beautiful state but, like Japan, it is prone to major earthquakes. A huge tsunami generated by a powerful earthquake in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands could threaten harbors and shorelines of 100 California cities and towns and 20 counties, the state’s tsunami specialist warned Monday. State and federal legislators voice concerns about the earthquake risk at two California nuclear power plants – as well as the adequacy of safety protocols in place there. Sacraemento – There were early warnings and a fast response when the recent Japan tsunami headed to the California coast.

haiti earthquake

Posted by admin | earthquakes | Friday 18 March 2011 10:08 pm

Travers O'Leary, a freshman at St. Mary's College in Southern Maryland, gave $10 last year to help victims of Haiti's earthquake. The amount is roughly half what it raised in the same period following the Haiti quake. Others are raising money, but it's nowhere near the amount raised after the Haiti quake. Rental prices in Port-au-Prince are estimated at 5 to 10 times higher than before the Haiti earthquake, pricing out local civic organizations in favor of wealthier international NGOs. While the final human cost of the Japan disaster is still unknown, it is still unlikely to compare to the 222570-strong death toll from the Haiti earthquake. The 2010 Haitian earthquake was a catastrophic quake, with an epicenter near the town of Léogâne, approximately 25 km west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. Bloomsbury has bought a novel about a boy trapped in a collapsed building in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake. Singer Nicole Scherzinger said her new album Killer Love was born out of the Haiti earthquake. News of the earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan has been widespread, but donations have lagged way, way behind. Haiti’s electoral council barred Lavalas from the elections a cholera epidemic and the devastation of the January 2010 earthquake. Individuals, companies and charities have been quick to rally in the aftermath of the massive earthquake that rocked Japan on Friday, but donations have been slow to come. Rebuffing critics who question whether she will have the strength and energy to lead Haiti in tackling huge developmental challenges, a cholera epidemic and the task of rebuilding after the devastating January 2010 earthquake. At last year’s American Geophysical Union meeting geologists were already questioning whether there was a climate change link underlying the increasing frequency of unusually large earthquakes, according to  Mathew McDermott at Treehugger. When that strategy is used, 99 percent of victims survive. After seven years in exile, former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide today returned to Haiti and vowed to dedicate himself to his nation’s health and education even amid fears that his presence will disrupt Sunday’s election. Snubbing the United States, former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide returned home from exile Friday, just ahead of a critical runoff election. Haiti’s ex-president Jean Bertrand Aristide was expected back home Friday after a seven-year exile, threatening to overshadow a crucial election in the troubled Caribbean nation. Former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide returned to Haiti on Friday, ending seven years of exile in South Africa despite U.S. objections and just two days before a crucial presidential election. Port-au-prince, Haiti— Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide returned home from seven years in exile to a celebrity welcome today, and immediately took a swipe at the decision to bar his political party from the country’s presidential election. Former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide made a triumphant homecoming to Haiti on Friday after seven years of exile, returning despite U.S. objections two days before a crucial presidential vote.
