unemployment

The gains are tempered by a rise in the unemployment rate to 9%, up from 8.8%. The nation's jobs recovery is proving rockier than expected, and New Jersey is showing itself to be especially fickle, according to new unemployment claims figures released yesterday. The state's depressed housing market won't see a dramatic reversal of fortune this year and unemployment will continue to remain stubbornly high for several more years, a trio of Arizona State University economists agreed Thursday. Renewed worries about the health of the job market are driving stocks lower after the government reported an unexpected jump in unemployment claims. But the unemployment rate rose to 9 percent in part because some people resumed looking for work. Businesses claim they added 244000 jobs in April, but workers say they lost 190000, pushing the unemployment rate up to 9%, from 8.8%. The unemployment rate for April rose to 9.0% from the previous month’s 8.8%. American businesses and workers are still not seeing eye to eye on the job market. The jobs recovery picked up speed in April, as business payrolls swelled and the unemployment rate rose as more people returned to the workforce. The economy added 244,000 jobs in April but the unemployment rate skipped from 8.8% to 9%. What gives? The number of jobs added comes from a survey of establishment payrolls. The April jobs report showed 244,000 job gains, “surprisingly strong” numbers according to the Kansas City Star. The employment picture for veterans improved in April — a sign that efforts to encourage employers to hire veterans may be working — but jobs seem to remain elusive for young, male combat veterans. The number of people applying for unemployment benefits surged last week to the highest level in eight months, a troubling sign a day ahead of the government’s report on April employment. The Labor Department released its monthly unemployment report this morning. The Government says it is pleased with a drop in unemployment but Labour and unions say a less than one percentage point decrease is nothing to crow about. At first blush, a rise in the unemployment rate sounds like bad news. Fewer people likely applied for unemployment benefits last week, partly reversing large gains in two out of the past three weeks.

Extended unemployment benefits – after the first 26 weeks – are paid by Uncle Sam, but only if states pass legislation allowing it. It couples the tax break and a bump in unemployment benefits. The 99ers have been unable to secure work and their unemployment benefits have ended, leaving them in a precarious situation. James Bunch is out of work. The caveat in this article is that i am not a tax professional and all tax advice within this article is strictly from research. She’s exhausted her 99 weeks of unemployment benefits, burned through her savings and struggled with no health insurance. On December 17th, Congress reauthorized emergency benefits for unemployed workers, giving them an extra 13 to 20 weeks of unemployment compensation. In these uncertain times, being let go from a job is a fact of life that many people have to face. Washington – The number of people applying for unemployment benefits plunged last week, reversing a spike from the previous week largely caused by harsh winter weather. Five Rockland residents have been arrested on charges of stealing unemployment benefits, authorities said today. So far, 37 states and D.C. are on board, four have unemployment levels too low to qualify, and nine just haven’t taken action. The good news is that slowly, but surely, the number of new people filing for unemployment insurance is going down a little. New York State unemployment benefits have been extended last December. With the state of Indiana expected to owe the federal government $80 million in interest payments alone this year, it’s no surprise Indiana lawmakers are moving to pay off a $2 billion debt for unemployment benefits. While the state’s unemployment rate decreased from 8.9 percent to 8.2 percent between December 2009 and December 2010, there are still roughly 793,000 unemployed New Yorkers. The unemployment rate is suddenly sinking at the fastest pace in a half-century, falling to 9 percent from 9.8 percent in just two months — the most encouraging sign for the job market since the recession ended. The time frame for collecting unemployment benefits would be shortened under legislation put forth in the state House, trying to address a yawning state budget deficit and a growing federal IOU. The measure also seeks to cut the burden on businesses, which pay into a fund that goes to pay jobless benefits.
