Teens and children's author Kate DiCamillo appears at the National Book Festival. Speaker Biography: Kate DiCamillo lived in the South for much of her childhood and received her bachelor's degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville. Her debut children's book, "Because of Winn Dixie" (2000), was a Newbery Honor Book and her second book, "The Tiger Rising" (2001), was a National Book Award finalist. DiCamillo's "The Tale of Despereaux" (Candlewick, 2003), is the winner of the 2004 Newbery Award. Her newest book is "The Magician's Elephant." DiCamillo lives in Minneapolis.

Fiction author and 2008 Pulitzer Prize winner Junot Diaz appears at the National Book Festival. Speaker Biography: Junot Diaz was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and is the author of the short-story collection "Drown" and the novel "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" (hardback 2007, paperback 2008), which won the John Sargent Sr. First Novel Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and the 2008 Pulitzer Prize. The New York Times said the novel is "so original it can only be described as Mario Vargas Llosa meets 'Star Trek' meets David Foster Wallace meets Kanye West." Diaz's fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, African Voices, "Best American Short Stories" (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000), "Pushcart Prize XXII" and "The O'Henry Prize Stories 2009."

Kay Ryan, the Library of Congress' 16th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry for 2008-2009, has written six books of poetry, plus a limited-edition artists book, along with a number of essays. Her books include Say Uncle (2000) and The Niagara River (Grove Press, 2005). She is the recipient of several awards, including the Gold Medal for poetry (2005) from the San Francisco Commonwealth Club, the Poetry Foundations Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize (2004) and four Pushcart Prizes. She has been selected in four different years for inclusion in the annual volumes of the Best American Poetry and has been a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets since 2006. She lives in Fairfax, California.

Children's book author and storyteller Carmen Agra Deedy appears at the National Book Festival. Speaker Biography: Children's book author and storyteller Carmen Agra Deedy was born in Havana, Cuba, emigrated to the United States with her family in 1963 during the aftermath of the Cuban Revolution and grew up in Decatur, Ga. She has written seven children's books. "The Yellow Star" (2000) has won more than a dozen awards, including the 2001 Christopher Award and the 2001 Jane Addams Peace Association Honor Book Award. She also wrote and performed "Growing Up Cuban in Decatur, Georgia," which is available on compact disc. Her most recent book is "14 Cows" (2009), on which she collaborated with Wilson Kimeli Naiyomah. Deedy lives in Georgia.

US Poet Laureate Kay Ryan appears at the National Book Festival. Speaker Biography: Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry Kay Ryan is in her second year in the position, which is chosen annually by the Librarian of Congress. Ryan's latest book, published in 2008, is an illustrated collection of poems titled "The Jam Jar Lifeboat." It contains whimsical color illustrations by Carl Dern. Her other publications include "The Niagara River" (2005), "Say Uncle" (2000), "Elephant Rocks" (1996), "Flamingo Watching" (1994), "Strangely Marked Metal" (1985) and "Dragon Acts to Dragon Ends" (1983). She is also the author of numerous essays. Ryan describes poetry as an intensely personal experience for both the writer and the reader. Her many awards include the 2005 Gold Medal for Poetry from the San Francisco Commonwealth Club, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize from the Poetry Foundation in 2004, a Guggenheim fellowship the same year and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship as well as the Maurice English Poetry Award in 2001. She lives in California.
